Box Office: "Monsters University" Scaring Off the Competition
Perhaps looking for a little nostalgia, movie-goers put "Monsters
University" on track to take top honors at the box office for the
weekend of June 21-23, 2013.
The newly-released prequel to Disney/Pixars 2001 hit "Monsters, Inc." scooped up a whopping $30.8 million on Friday and is expected to rake in a three day total of $79 million.
Another newcomer to the cinema this week, the Brad Pitt
action-drama "World War Z" looks to be headed toward a second-place
finish with $25.5 million and an estimated weekend total of $42.7
million.
Rounding out the top five in Friday earnings are the previously-dominant "Man of Steel" ($12.7 million) in third, the Seth Rogen comedy "This is the End" ($4.1 million) in fourth, and the Isla Fisher caper "Now You See Me" ($2.45 million) in fifth.
