Box Office: Minions Look to Take "Despicable Me 2" to the Top
Movie-goers looking to beat the heat on a long weekend are
favoring the animated "Despicable Me 2" in the race to the top of the
box office for July 3-7, 2013.
The Steve Carell-voiced tale of the Anti-Villain League grabbed a strong three-day total of $90 million, blowing its competition out of the water.
The Johnny Depp-fronted
Disney flick "The Lone Ranger" looks to be headed towards a second
place ranking, picking up $30 million in the first days of the holiday
weekend.
Rounding out the top five in three-day earnings are Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock's comedy "The Heat" ($20.1 million) in third, Pixar Animation's "Monsters University" ($17.7 million) in fourth, and Brad Pitt's "World War Z" ($14.5 million) in fifth.
